2018 Transportation Outlook

April 2, 2018News

As we close the first quarter of 2018, one of the largest challenges facing companies revolves around transportation capacity & availability.

2017 ended with what was estimated to be a 248,000 driver shortage for the commercial trucking industry. The compliance requirements around e – logs and a large population of CDL drivers at or near retirement age were the leading factor in the short fall. Compliance around reporting driving hours caused a significant portion of independent owner operators to exit the market. With tighter tracking and enforcement, independent drivers would no longer be able to operate their trucks profitably. Drivers near or in retirement age years were quick to exit the market.

As we look at first quarter data from sources such as Bloomberg and Morningstar we see additional CDL drivers exiting the market. This will give transportation companies additional pricing power, selectivity in choosing what freight they carry and selectivity as to where they pick up & deliver. Additionally, driver wages are escalating rapidly with a tightening labor pool.

Tilley is forecasting demand for trucking to exceed the overall supply in North America for all of 2018. Morningstar estimates Demand is 120% of Supply to start the year. This means that 1 in 5 shipments will not be fulfilled as required.

This supply demand imbalance will cause freight rates to continue to rise in 2018. If rates continue to rise expect product costs to increase, fuel surcharges to increase, and if not managed properly profit margins to erode.

Tilley Recommendations for Customers:

 Develop Stocking & Delivery Agreements with your Distributors

 Keep Updated on Lead Time Estimates for Critical Materials

 Hold Larger Inventories of Critical Raw Materials

 Understand the Cost of a Shut Down vs. Holding More Inventory and vs. Stocking & Delivery Agreements with Distributors

 Work with Distributors who have Company Owned Delivery Fleets

 Understand the Impact of Freight Costs on your Product/Svc Offering

DOW Heat Transfer Fluids – Saving You Time and Money

July 21, 2017News

The benefits of using Dow heat transfer fluids, Dowfrost and Dowtherm, are vast. Dow Chemical manufactures top of the line products that are backed by years of trial and error, expert stewardship and cutting edge science. Dowfrost and Dowtherm are no different.

The science behind these items is very complex, but the math is simple. They will save you time and money.

Dowfrost, made with DOW PuraGuard Propylene Glycol, and Dowtherm, made with 100% virgin ethylene glycol, are both formulated with heavy-duty industrial inhibitor packages that prevent corrosion. So, mix water and straight propylene glycol? That will wreak havoc on your system until you have a big, expensive problem on your hands. Use Dowfrost with the inhibitor package and enjoy peace of mind.

If there is a leak in your system, Dow’s heat transfer fluids are dyed fluorescent pink so you easily see where the leak is.

Dowfrost is commonly used in situations where contact with food and beverage could possibly occur such as fermentation cooling and immersion freezing. Other suitable applications for Dowfrost are single fluid process heating and cooling, and closed-loop, water based HVAC applications where propylene glycol solutions are preferred.

Dowtherm can be used in thermally demanding applications where long fluid life is required and also in HVAC, process heating and cooling and food industry applications. Your salesman will help you determine which material is right for you!

As previously mentioned, aside from the sheer quality of the glycols used, the inhibitor package featured in these products is what truly sets them apart. It’s worth noting that they are easily maintained, long lasting and replenishable, so intervals between fluid change outs are extended and fluid expense is minimized.

This brings us back to our key point. Dow heat transfer fluids will save you both time and money.

Safety First!

September 16, 2016News, Training

Tilley Chemical strives to lead the Chemical and Oil and Lube industries in quality, customer service and safety. Delivering your products to you in pristine condition is paramount for your success and we understand that. This is why we have safety training demonstrations to ensure that our staff can serve you without issue.

This week we took to our warehouse lot to demonstrate how to properly secure totes to forklifts while moving. In this first video, you’ll see things didn’t go so well…

Please note, we did not use actual product for this demonstration, just water!

When our driver came to a halt, the improperly secured tote slid off. This would have been a costly and dangerous mistake had this been the real thing, so in the next video, we show the proper way to fasten a tote.

These videos are used for training purposes to reinforce the importance of safety to our employees, and to help demonstrate the Tilley way to new hires.
